New Entry Permit to the United Kingdom
Starting from January 8, 2025, all travelers planning to enter the United Kingdom will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new requirement will apply to tourists, as well as those traveling for business or family purposes, and aims to enhance the country’s security and immigration controls.
What is the ETA?
The ETA is an electronic authorization that allows entry into the United Kingdom for a maximum period of six months. Similar to the ESTA system used in the United States, this requirement will be mandatory even for those who are only transiting through UK airports. The fee will be £10, and the authorization will be valid for two years or until the associated passport expires.
How to Apply for the ETA?
The ETA application process will be fully online and can be completed through the official UK government website or via the UK ETA app. To complete the application, you will need the following documents:
- A valid passport.
- A recent digital photograph.
- A payment method to cover the fee.
The process will take about 10-15 minutes, and a response will be provided within three working days. It is recommended to apply in advance to avoid delays.
Who Needs to Apply for the ETA?
Citizens from several countries, including Spain and the United States, will be required to obtain this authorization. The implementation will be gradual, with more countries added before it becomes mandatory for everyone in the spring of 2025.
What About Passengers in Transit?
Even those merely transiting through UK airports will need to have an ETA. This new requirement affects travelers in transit, adding an extra step for those connecting flights through the UK. The aim of this system is to ensure greater security before travelers begin their journey, helping prevent misuse of the UK immigration system.
